Last Saturday a team of 14 finely re-tuned athletes aged 25 to 67 swam in the Etwall Masters Gala at Alfreton. Each swimmer had a range of events, from Mike ‘Endurance’ Brett in the 25m sprints to Lorna ‘Swim Everything’ Dashfield in 25’s, 50’s and 100’s. After 66 races, Belper Masters can now boast 22 Derbyshire County Championship gold medals between them. This includes the unbeaten 160+ relay team, which won the Freestyle and Medley races defeating the much larger squads from Luton, Etwall & Kenilworth. Their efforts also help Belper gain 3rd place in the visiting club competition, our best result for some years and the first time we’ve beaten the nationally recognised Chesterfield team.
Later on, the team were joined by training buddies for a post-gala meal and celebratory tipple. Belper’s finest were out in style, and so were we. The stamina developed during hours spent training in the pool paid off on the dance floor, and a good time was had by all. Not many made it to 8am training the following day, but most agreed to work hard in the pool so that 2017 is an even more successful year.
We are always looking for more swimmers to join us, for training, racing and socialising. If you’re interested please contact Robert Rantzen at email@example.com.’
On 10th December after the last Arena League meet in Derby I would like to invite all swimmers, coaches, parents etc to a fundraising event at Belper Football club (the invitation is of course extended to any swimmer family in the club even if you are not at Arena League).
The event is to raise money to support a group of Belper and Duffield Scouts who are heading over to America next summer on an exchange. William, Samuel and I are lucky enough to be going.
See attached a flyer but essentially there is live music from a local group and a young teenage singer songwriter.
Tickets are £5 each plus there will be a bar and a BBQ to buy food and drink. Although the evening starts at 7.30 I don’t suppose things will really get started until about 8.30.
It would be a great way to celebrate the end the swimming term.
